Nate Diaz should give a shit about the welterweight title. I get the sense he doesnโt. Considering what he has said this week about potentially being the #1 contender for Kamaru Usmanโs welterweight title if he gets the win this Saturday night. If Diaz is handed the microphone late Saturday night, or even Sunday morning, my guess is the call out is going to be Conor McGregor. McGregor is expected to return himself on January 18 of next year. Listen, the 2nd Nate Diaz-Conor McGregor fight is the greatest fight of all-time. It was also one of the most important. If McGregor did not win that fight over Diaz that night in August 2016, we do not get MAY-MAC, and we certainly do not get UFC 229. It was also a pretty damn good athletic contest in-cage.
Diaz should enjoy the fact that he is right now the A-side in this McGregor blood feud. Diaz is the biggest star so far of the ESPN era, and McGregor is fighting for relevancy, and maybe his freedom. The 3rd McGregor fight will always be there. That fight will be relevant if Diaz loses Saturday, and then loses his next Three. Even if they parade McGregor out in shackles and an Orange jump suit, unclasp him and open the cage door you will buy it. Hell, it may even add to the drama.
Diaz should set his sights on the one thing that has evaded him his entire career. UFC gold. Do not tell me that this โโBMFโโ title means anything. It doesnโt. The real title resides right now with Kamaru Usman. Imagine if Colby Covington defeats Kamaru Usman on December 14th? How great would the lead up be if Diaz is in line for a title shot against the MAGA hat wearing, movie ending spoiling Covington. I can already see Diaz seething while Covington goes on one of his long, meandering diatribes. That visual is worth its weight in gold. Pun totally intended.
You can do the McGregor fight anywhere, anytime. Diaz going for a world title would be a massive story, and would do great business. Especially if he gets the right dance partner on the other side. If you had to pick one man on earth to dole out comeuppance to Colby Covington, I mean, who would you pick? The the weed smoking, F-bomb dropping, Stockton bad boy fits every bill. I am rooting for Diaz to win this weekend, and for Covington to also win in December. McGregor can wait.
We may not know this, but Nate Diaz might be the hero we need.
